What do Italians think of Turks

I don't think there's any specific or strong common thought among italians about Turkis people. The only real stereotype that I've ever heard about Turks is that they smoke a lot. We have a saying that goes "(S)he smokes like a Turk!" meaning they smoke a lot. Apart from this, I've often heard from people around me who went to Turkey that they found it really beautiful, and several years ago some friends of mine went there expecting some kind of religious restrictions for women, like having to mind to cover hair and legs, but discovered instead with much wonder that there were none. I've always heard nice things from people who've travelled there. In the last years maybe people know Turkey also from what is said in the news, politics and so on, and - I can't speak for everyone of course, - but the general impression from that perspective might be the one of a country facing several issues with foreign policy and democracy.
